Resources in Times of Need

Support for Students Impacted by Unrest in the Middle East

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs recognizes that global events can deeply affect members of our campus community. Students with family, friends, or personal ties to regions experiencing unrest in the Middle East may be navigating stress, uncertainty, or disruptions that affect their academic experience and well-being.

UCCS is committed to supporting students during challenging times. The resources below are available to help students access support, connect with campus services, and find community.

On-Campus Support and Resources

  1. CARE Team Support

Students who are experiencing distress, facing personal challenges, or who need help navigating campus resources can be referred to the CARE Team.

The CARE Team helps connect students with appropriate campus support services, including academic, mental health, and basic needs resources.

Students, faculty, and staff may submit a referral if they are concerned about a student’s wellbeing.

Submit a referral or learn more: https://dos.uccs.edu/care-team

  2. Clyde’s Cupboard & Basic Needs Support

Students experiencing food insecurity can access Clyde’s Cupboard, UCCS’ on-campus food pantry. The pantry provides free food and hygiene items to help support students experiencing financial hardship.

Students from impacted areas who would benefit from ongoing food support may also be added to the Mountain Lion Meals recurring list.

  3. Academic Flexibility

We understand that students with ties to affected regions may be experiencing stress, communication challenges with family, or unexpected responsibilities.

The university is working with faculty to provide awareness and flexibility for international students known to be impacted, specifically those from countries directly affected by the unrest.

Students who are experiencing academic challenges related to these circumstances are encouraged to reach out to their instructors or contact the Dean of Students Office for support.

  4. International Affairs

The Office of International Affairs provides support and guidance for international students, including assistance with travel concerns, immigration questions, and navigating challenges that arise from international events.

Learn more or contact their office: https://international.uccs.edu/

  5. Community Gathering for Students Impacted by Middle East Unrest

Thursday, March 19 at 11:00 a.m. in the Copper House Commons (outside the International Affairs Office in Copper House). Students are invited to attend for connection and support. Participants are welcome to bring an item, photo, or small object that represents a positive memory, home, or something that brings comfort. Those who feel comfortable may share the meaning of their item with the group, but there is no expectation or pressure to speak.

  6. Mental Health Services - TELUS Health

Experiencing global conflict or uncertainty can impact emotional and mental well-being. UCCS offers confidential counseling and mental health resources for students who may be experiencing stress, anxiety, grief, or concern for loved ones abroad.

Mental Health Services can provide individual support and referrals to additional resources. Learn more about available services: https://recwellness.uccs.edu/mental-health-services

  7. Reflection and Spiritual Spaces

Creating an inclusive campus means supporting the spiritual and reflective needs of our community. Reflection spaces offer calm and private areas for meditation, prayer, or quiet reflection.

    Reflection spaces are located in:

    · MOSAIC & LGBTQ+ Resource Center - University Center Room 110

    · Kraemer Family Library – 3rd Floor Reflection Space - University Center Room 315

These spaces are open to individuals of all faiths and backgrounds.

The university is also working to identify additional reflection spaces across campus to support students during this time.

  8. Ramadan Reminder

Some students on campus may currently be observing Ramadan, a holy month of fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by many Muslims.

During Ramadan, students may be fasting from dawn until sunset, which can impact energy levels, schedules, and participation in evening religious practices.

Members of the campus community are encouraged to show understanding and flexibility during this time. Small considerations, such as scheduling awareness and supportive classroom environments, can help foster an inclusive campus community.
